Paul Conroy

Architectural Scientist, Acoustics, Audio and Broadcast Engineer

Paul Conroy is a freelance architectural scientist specialising in acoustics, audio and broadcast engineering with extensive project management delivery, operational and technical experience in the Australian radio and television industry.

Paul is currently completing his Masters of Architectural Science at Sydney University, where he is increasing his skills in computational acoustics and has developed an interest in building physics, particularly thermal modeling for the upcoming Australian National Construction Code requirements.

Paul's recent work includes the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Radio Master Control in Ultimo.  Some of the tasks were to develop and implement an operational plan for their centralised radio (audio) router replacement with nil planned outage time, as well as training staff on new software, managing national tranmsission, ensuring network scheduled switching and stand-by arrangements. Paul has also worked for ABC Grandstand as a Technical Director for several Cricket tests, as well as ongoing work as an at-ground producer and technical director for A-league, NRL, AFL, Rugby, Sheffield Sheild, Golf and many other sporting codes.

Paul completed a contract with the Macquarie Radio Network as Team Leader, Operations Manager and Chief Technician for 2GB's 2008 Beijing Olympic Games coverage. Paul has provided assistance for the radio contribution/ distribution of every Olympic and Commonwealth Games since Athens 2004.

Prior to a career in broadcasting, Paul gained experience as a live audio engineer for many local Sydney bands and ensembles for over a decade, worked as a noise consultant for two specialist environmental and architectural acoustic firms, hand coded html for websites, taught audio engineering at the Australian Institute of Music and completed a year-long acoustics research project with CSIRO in collaboration with a local microphone manufacturer.

When not working, Paul enjoys hanging out with his partner Astrid, friends and family, playing the piano and double bass, writing music, travelling, coaching rowing, rowing in a single and quad scull, reading a decent novel, boating, spending time gardening, listening to wide-ranging genres of music from classical to electronic, renovating, going to the gym and cooking.
